Though not everywhere, there are certain high schools, in certain locations whose reputation for excellence precedes them. Whether the reputation is centered on academics or athletics, there are always certain groups inside certain schools who are known by many to achieve high levels of success. One such group who continues to remain competitive year after year, despite the continual turnover faced by all high school teams, is the soccer program at Grissom High School. That is where we find our next Athlete of the Week for the month of April, and the varsity boys team is where Garren Hayes is adding his name to the list of players who help build on the reputation of the program. Garren began his role with Tigers’ Soccer in the 7th grade and started playing on the varsity team his freshman year. By his junior year, Garren had been named Captain of the varsity team and Offensive Player of the Year. He then was selected to the Alabama All-State soccer team and ultimately, the Alabama All-Star team. In the classroom, Garren is continuing his own legacy and building on his already sterling reputation of being a great student. He has maintained A’s and B’s his entire academic career, which is the main reason his GPA is a hefty 3.975. Garren is an active member of the National Honors Society and has scored high marks on both his SAT and ACT exams. He also works hard at building a good reputation of giving back to his community and volunteering his time where needed. As a member of the Junior Civitan group, Garren is very much involved in year-long community service projects, which the group organizes and participates. He is also a very active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has been acting leader with the group for several year. Congratulations, Garren!
