If you’ve torn your ACL, you’ve probably already heard the standard advice: ACL reconstruction surgery, using a graft from your own patellar, quadriceps or hamstring tendon. It works, and it’s helped generations of athletes get back on their feet.
Now there’s a different option. The BEAR® Implant (Bridge-Enhanced ACL Restoration) is an FDA-approved ACL tear treatment that helps your body heal its own ligament, instead of removing it and replacing it with graft tissue.
What Is the BEAR® Implant?
The BEAR Implant is a small, sponge-like device placed between the two torn ends of the ACL, along with a small amount of the patient’s own blood. This combination creates a protective environment where the body’s natural healing response can reconnect and rebuild the ligament without needing tissue from elsewhere in the limb
Over roughly eight weeks, the implant is absorbed and replaced by the patient’s own collagen, cells, and blood vessels, which continue to mature and strengthen over time.
BEAR® Implant vs. Traditional ACL Reconstruction
Because no graft is needed, patients avoid the pain and morbidity that often comes with harvesting graft tissue. Clinical research backs this up:
- Patients who received the BEAR® Implant retained more natural hamstring strength at one year compared to traditional ACL reconstruction.
- Patients reported fewer symptoms at the one-year mark.
- Stability and function were similar between both groups at two years.
Many patients choose this treatment option with comparable long-term results and less tissue sacrificed to get there.
Am I a Candidate for the BEAR® Implant?
You may be eligible for the BEAR Implant if you have a partial or complete ACL tear confirmed by MRI. One important note from real-world use: candidacy isn’t mainly about how long ago the injury happened. It comes down to the quality of the remaining ACL tissue – how much healthy structure is still there for the body to build on.
The only way to know for sure is an MRI review and evaluation with an orthopaedic surgeon.
Is the BEAR® Implant Right for Every ACL Tear?
Not every tear or every patient is a fit for this treatment. As with any ACL injury, the right next step starts with imaging and a conversation with a qualified orthopaedic surgeon who can assess your specific tear and injury history.
